Who we are
SEGGER Microcontroller has been active in embedded systems for more than 30 years. Embedded systems are small, specialized computers that operate inside a device that is not primarily a computer. Anything in today's world that has a display or keys, or that controls a motor contains an embedded computer and is considered an embedded system. Examples range from telephones, cameras, modern coffee makers, and washing machines to trains, planes, automobiles, and even satellites and lunar rovers.
SEGGER has extensive experience producing cutting-edge real-time operating systems and software libraries. Furthermore, it also offers a full set of development- and production-oriented hardware tools, as well as software tools.
SEGGER's motto is: "It simply works." This is reflected in the company's products, which are professional grade and easy to use in what is a complex, highly technical industry. Embedded systems are a growing part of everyday life, and SEGGER is passionate about its work in this rapidly changing field.

What we offer
SEGGER offers a comprehensive suite of tools and software solutions for every stage of the embedded-system creation process. Our portfolio is organized into five categories: Create, Build, Debug, Verify, and Program. These categories directly align with the workflow found in a typical development process. The category structure ensures that developers have access to the right tools and solutions at every step of the way—from the initial idea to the finished product.
Whether a developer is working on creating a solid foundation with the all-in-one operating system emPower OS, or building and optimizing code with Embedded Studio, the powerful multi-platform C/C++ IDE, SEGGER's development tools are reliable and robust. Furthermore, we make the process of debugging and tracing applications easy with J-Link debug probes and J-Trace streaming trace probes. Once the development process nears completion, we help developers verify performance with SystemView and program end products efficiently with our Flasher in-circuit programmers.

Where we are
SEGGER is headquartered in Monheim am Rhein, Germany, near Düsseldorf, in modern facilities that house our administration, engineering, marketing, production, and sales departments. These facilities are owned and occupied exclusively by SEGGER.
SEGGER's office in the United States is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and has ample room for further expansion. SEGGER also has branch operations in the United Kingdom; China; and Silicon Valley, Califorina, United States. Our products are sold globally, both directly and through distributors.
How we started
After working as an independent contractor in embedded-system software development, Rolf Segger made the decision to begin writing fully portable code for a wide range of applications. SEGGER the company was then founded in 1992, and it has been privately held ever since.
SEGGER has its roots in software, and it sold its efficient embOS real-time operating system to companies that targeted mass-market products, such as white goods. embOS has now been deployed in several billion devices, and with more than 30 years of continuous development, it has become the driving force behind SEGGER's philosophy and growth. All SEGGER products are developed in-house, purpose-built from the ground up, used extensively within the company itself, and continuously updated and further evolved.
The introduction of the Flasher standalone programmers marked SEGGER's entry into hardware. The Flasher product line is easy to operate and perfectly suited for mass-production environments. In 2004, as the ARM market began to emerge, SEGGER introduced the J-Link debug probe, which soon became the de-facto industry standard in ARM-based embedded development. Easy to operate, ultra fast, robust, and stable, J-Link has stayed ahead of the competition as the debug probe of choice for ARM (and others, from 8051 to RISC-V) for 15 years and counting!
Meanwhile, SEGGER's emWin software went on to become the standard graphics library for microcontrollers. Most popular silicon vendors today offer their customers a free library version of emWin.
Over the past two decades, SEGGER has introduced new software in the fields of communication, compression, data storage, security, cryptography, and the Internet of Things; its own integrated development environment, Embedded Studio; and powerful tools, like Systemview.
Our most demanding customer
We use our own tools for development and production in both hardware and software. Our software runs our hardware and our hardware verifies and programs our new software. The in-house feedback loop in which we are our own most demanding customer ensures that we deliver the highest quality products possible to our customers.
Private ownership, and stability
A key component of SEGGER's success is private ownership. This has meant stability and reliability since the company's inception. Having grown organically, the company is free from many of the issues that can complicate life for public companies, such as investment requirements; product dilution; a focus on quarterly earnings; bankers; and, above all, shareholder pressure to "cash out" when business is booming. Management can make decisions that are in the best interests of the respective company's customers, employees, and its own health. Furthermore, these decisions can be made with the long-term health of the company in mind, rather than as a response to short-term pressure.
The stability that results from this management approach is also an asset in human resources. The majority of SEGGER's employees stay with the company for decades. And for SEGGER customers, the company's stability means that they always know who they are dealing with and, in many cases, they deal with the same people for many years. SEGGER products are supported by the very same group of people that built them, and customers can rely on consistent supplies and quality, free of concerns that the company might suddenly be acquired by a competitor or silicon vendor.
Support for education
We are very proud of the quality of our products. But if there is one thing we are even more proud of, it is the support we provide for students and hobbyists.
Through SEGGER's Friendly License, most of our software tools are available at no cost for non-commercial use. We encourage students and hobbyists to utilize SEGGER tools to develop their ideas and even their careers. SEGGER also offers educational versions of the popular J-Link debug probe, and the J-Link EDU Mini is available for educational purposes at a minimal cost.
Making professional tools available to students around the world creates opportunity for all. We proudly support the next generation of embedded experts!
Choosing SEGGER
SEGGER offers a complete set of tools for embedded systems and support through the entire development process. We have decades of experience underpinning our claim of being The Embedded Experts.
Furthermore, SEGGER software is not covered by an open-source or required-attribution license, and it can be integrated into any commercial or proprietary product, with no obligation to disclose the combined source.
In short: SEGGER offers stability in an often volatile industry, which makes us a solid, reliable partner for the long term.
